  • Encaustic Paint (wax)

The word Encaustic comes from the Greek word encaustikos which means to burn in. Encaustic is an apt term, because encaustic painting is the art of painting with heated wax.

Encaustic medium is made from beeswax mixed with damar resin, and the paint is made by adding pigment to the medium. The wax serves as an excellent binder for the pigment. Encaustic Wax paint can be made at home by mixing pigment in with the medium or it can be purchased online or at most local art stores. Regular beeswax from your local apiarist ( bee keeper) will work to create these works of art but the damar resin added to the beeswax creates a durable finish, a higher melting temperature which provides more stability in the final artwork. Wax can be scraped molded, stamped, stencilled, drawn and more. No matter how you play with wax, it is a versatile and addictive medium to work with.

  • Acrylic Paint & Mediums

Acrylic paint is pigment suspended in a plastic polymer emulsion. Used with water they are great for beginner painters. When dry they are permanently affixed to the surface, unlike watercolour which can be lifted. Sue to their flexible, plastic nature acrylics are tough and resistant to many environmental factors that would affect other mediums. Acrylics are fast drying which makes working with them a faster process. Acrylic painting is not limited to the paint and pigments but also involves a variety of mediums to alter the viscosity and look of the paint. There are many products on the shelves of stores in the acrylic section. It is an easy medium to get started painting.

  • Collage | Mixed Media

The word collage was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Collage is a fancy word meaning "to glue". Collage is a legitimate art form. It is assemblage of ephemera; photographs, found objects, magazines, paints, papers, fabrics, drawing media and more!

  • Drawing

Drawing is the act of mark making where the creator makes marks on a surface. Traditional drawing media include dry medias; pastels ( chalk or oil), charcoal or conte. Traditional wet drawing media includes india inks. Ingenious new drawing media are acrylic inks and PanPastel.

Pan Pastel / Chalk Pastel

Pastels have been around for centuries. Pastels are a pigment in a binder ( these binders vary from gum arabic to chalk) Pastels were traditionally sold in a stick or crayon form.

Pan pastel is a new form of pastel. They are sold in small round pans and they are applied with an applicator similar to a makeup brush. They create soft, loose, painterly drawings.

Charcoal

Artists' charcoal is a dry art medium made of finely ground organic materials held together by a gum or wax binder OR produced with woods “heated’ while eliminating the oxygen inside the material..

Conté

Conté also known as Conté sticks or Conté crayons, are a dry drawing medium composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with wax or clay base.

Ink

India Ink is a simple black or colored ink once widely used for writing and printing and commonly used for drawing. There are various types of modern drawing inks, however, India Ink was once the most well known wet drawing media.
